How do we admonish a person who does not guard his tongue while fasting in the month of Ramadan?

A. (Dr. Zakir): Guarding the tongue is very important, because many times or most of the times, the tongue can cause more damage to a person than whether it be physical, torture or whatever it is, you know tongue, supposedly be careful of the tongue. And there are various ‘Saheeh‘ Hadith dealing with this topic.

Ibn Mas’udd (may Allah be pleased with him), he says, “By Allah, there is nothing more deserving than the extended control of the tongue.”

(MUSANNAF IBN ABI SHAYBAH, VOLUME 5, BOOK OF MANNERS, HADITH 26490)

And a similar message is given in the next Hadith,

Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) he says, “(holding his tongue) this is the thing that has got me to this position.”

(MUSANNAF IBN ABI SHAIBAH VOLUME 5, BOOK OF MANNERS, HADITH 26491)

That means he was careful of his tongue, that’s the reason he reached this position.

And there are many verses in the Qur’an where Allah سبحانه و تعالى says,

إِذْ يَتَلَقَّى الْمُتَلَقِّيَانِ عَنِ الْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ الشِّمَالِ قَعِيدٌ

“Not a word does he utter but there is a sentinel by him, ready (to note it).”

(SURAH QAF, CHAPTER 50, VERSE 18)

That means every word that you say is being written down by an Angel.

Further it is mentioned in the Qur’an, Allah سبحانه و تعالى says,

“Say to My servants that they should (only) say those things that are best: for Satan doth sow dissensions among them: For Satan is to man an avowed enemy.”

(SURAH ISRA, CHAPTER 17, VERSE 53)

So Allah سبحانه و تعالى says and guides us in the Qur’an that we be careful when you use your tongue. And our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said,

“A Muslim is the one who avoids harming Muslims with his tongue or his hands…”

(SAHEEH AL-BUHARI. VOLUME 8, HADITH 6484)

And our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ further said,

“Whoever can guarantee (the chastity of) what is between his two jaw-bones and what is between his two legs (i.e. his tongue and his private parts), I guarantee Paradise for him.”

(SAHEEH AL-BUKHARI, VOLUME 8, HADITH 6474)

So, the person who can guarantee the chastity, the safety of the tongue and the private parts, he will be guaranteed Paradise.

Our beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) further said,

“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should talk what is good or keep quiet…”

(SAHEEH AL-BUKHARI, VOLUME 8, HADITH 6475)

That means when you open your tongue, speak what is good otherwise keep quiet.

And our Prophet ﷺ also said,

“Fasting is a shield…”

(SAHEEH AL-BUKHARI, VOLUME 3, BOOK OF FASTING HADITH 1894/1904)

So fasting helps you to protect and helps you in self control, and a person should guard his tongue, that is the best for him.
